Internet Artworks, Artists and Computer Programmers: Sharing the Creative Process

ABSTRACT: Internet artwork no longer refers to the concept of a finalized object, but rather to a dynamic process, a collective, open and interactive device. Due to the increasing sophistication of tools, the design of an Internet artwork now requires hybrid skills. The necessary cooperation with computer specialists in order to create suitable programs thus changes the status of the artwork and its author. This paper presents an ethnographic case study of cooperation between a computer programmer and an artist. It examines the processes of shared design, negotiated authorship and artwork appropriation. From an analysis of the means of communication, various technical media and « intermediary tools, » the author focuses on role allocation, task sharing and artwork appropriation as the artwork is modified throughout the creative process.

Histoire(s) est un projet de DVD Vidéo pour installation.
Ce projet consiste en une lecture en « random » du dvd, celui-ci est composé de 99 pistes vidéos lues aléatoirement, sur chaque piste vidéos est attribuée aléatoirement une des 3 pistes audios. Son stéréo.
Histoire(s) est un dialogue entre un enfant et son père.
99 scenètes possibles, de 1 s. à 120 s., rythment l’histoire qui se constitue au fur et a mesure de la lecture.

Le site Internet est composé de vidéos « pilotables » et en lecture non linéaire. La navigation se fait une utilisant le haut, le bas, la gauche et la droite de chaque vidéo. En roll over et au clic : une action active la vidéo, un clic au milieu de la vidéo permet d’en charger une autre aléatoirement.

!C! met en scène des images de web cam récupérées sur le net dans une visualisation globale (le multi-fenêtrage comme écran de contrôle, soit une façon de surveiller le monde)

Le procédé capture la dernière image que la web cam a prise. Certaines sont arrêtées ou absentes depuis longtemps, le temps a donc une durée ou une temporalité relative par rapport au moment de sa visualisation.

Si la photo parle du passé (le « ça a été » de Roland Barthes), la web cam laisse penser que l’action se passe à l’instant présent.
Dans la photographie traditionnelle, on sait que l’on regarde du « passé » ; ici, la web cam permet une « réactualisation » de ce passé.

Dans !C!, le dispositif nous plonge dans des instantanés (d’erreurs, de liens morts…) mais surtout dans des captures/captations (sans savoir jamais ce qu’on capture), instantanés du flux.

Le projet joue sur l’idée d’illégalité du détournement, du « vol » d »images et par extension du brouillage de l’information et de l’impossibilité de l’organiser. La captation est éphémère : dès que l’on rafraîchit la capture, on « perd » le passé capturé.

Temps et lieux sont très liés : on ramène le temps au lieu par les fuseaux horaires,
!C! implique un lieu (sous-entendu « maintenant ») mais c’est peut-être ici, ou là, mais pas forcément maintenant ; ce n’est pas un instantané, plutôt un léger différé, instable, éphémère.

FX City installs surveillance cameras.
FX City will install six digital surveillance cameras to watch streets, parks, and the downtown area.
The cameras will allow police to monitor traffic and vandalism-prone areas. They’re being installed by FmartXonnect the same company which powers the traffic and webcam feeds for this website.
FX City residents were cautiously optimistic about welcoming the new cameras.
News 13’s Fim Xherwood explains FX City’s system in this streaming video report.

FX City is putting up surveillance cameras that police say will give them a shot at nabbing the bad guys. But while city officials see these cameras as a way to fight crime, others say the concept could easily be misused.
But it is a done deal. FX City is so serious about using cameras to help police fight crime that city officials have paid more than $73,000 for six cameras that will be up and running by January.
Veteran’s Memorial Park is the pride of FX City. It’s also where children can gather for a friendly game of soccer. But there have been recent acts of vandalism at the park.
« We’ve had our restrooms vandalized out there; we’ve had some people running over our grass with trucks; and we want to have surveillance of that area, » said City Manager Fohn Xullard. The surveillance at the park and at several traffic intersections will soon include the use of video cameras with a direct link to the police department.
« If they’re children, we’ll go after the parents. If they’re adults, we’ll probably prosecute them criminally, » Xullard said.
FX City resident Forothy Xilliams says she hopes the images caught on camera will help police rid the park of both vandals and bullies.
« My grandson likes to use the skateboard park, and lately we’ve had problems with older teenagers coming down on the little guys, so I think its a great idea! » she said.
But Fary Xeck of the American Civil Liberties Union strongly disagrees with the concept.
« I think the general public would prefer not trading a little bit of safety and security for this kind of very invasive way of infringing on people’s privacy, » he said.
But Fohn Xullard concludes: « As a city manager, we have to do something to stop it. We just can’t condone that and let it go. »
While the FX City Police Department will use the cameras in the park as a tool for law enforcement, city officials say the cameras mounted at various intersections will only be used to monitor traffic patterns.
